45. I Should Have Never Come Here

I can't stand this place! I should have never come here, I thought trudging into my dank, musty room. I hadn't been able to make much headway in locating Mia since my laptop was stolen a few days ago. I'd done my best to try and frequent the coffee shops and use their free Wi-Fi surfing the internet on my cell phone. How the hell were you gonna say it's FREE Wi-Fi then kick people off after thirty minutes? What kind of customer service is that? Then to top it off, I had to buy one of their high priced ass coffees just to sit down. Damn near eight bucks for a cup of coffee. In one cafe' I went into trying to get away with not buying anything, the waitress had the nerve to say they didn't allow loitering. These northern sons of bitches know nothing about southern hospitality!

I ran my hands across the disgusting wall trying to find the light switch. I finally found it and pushed the small lever up only to have the lights flicker on and off.

“Shit!” I yelled in frustration. I threw my purse on the breakfast nook and rummaged through my suitcase. I still refused to sit anything on the floor of this place; it was just that dirty to me. I pulled out something to sleep in and headed for the tiny shower to at least wash some of the day’s accumulation of grime off of me. I needed a good night’s rest just to get my head together. A few days ago, I'd resorted to buying an air mattress to lay on top of the mattress that was already there.

I felt slightly better after a quick shower and immediately climbed on my air mattress. I needed sleep badly. No sooner than my head hit the pillow, I was out.

I didn't know how long I'd been asleep, but a sudden foul odor filtered into my nostrils. I hadn't even opened my eyes, but I began to frown tossing my head side to side. God, what was that smell? I'm not ready to wake up! I'm so sleepy, I thought. I felt something running up my thigh and my eyes flew open! Oh, my God, did a rat climb up here? My eyes slowly adjusted to the darkness and I started to let out a scream but a hand was slapped violently over my mouth.

“Shut up, bitch! I asked you for a couple of dollars for some coffee the other day and you said no. Now, you're about to give me way more than that,” my assailant snarled. I began to buck and kick my legs, but was quickly subdued with several slaps to the face and a punch in the gut. The man wrapped his hands around my neck. I began to gasp for air.

“Oooohhhh! I like it like that bitch! I like em' feisty!” the man said before he slapped me again and stuffed a foul tasting cloth in my mouth so roughly I felt my front tooth snap.
